Mililani sweeps OIA track

By Dennis Anderson
Advertiser Staff Writer

MILILANI — Mililani girls co-captains Cherina Tucker and Aleina Hammonds couldn't stick around the O'ahu Interscholastic Association track and field championship meet yesterday to find out if they had completed a grand slam.

They had to hurry home, change into their best gowns and rush to the Sheraton Waikiki for the school's Senior Prom. Sprinter Cherina even wore her $50-plus prom hairdo for the meet; she was easily the best-coifed athlete there.

It wasn't until 10 minutes after they left, when the long-completed high jump results were finally spit out by the computer, that the result was known. Mililani had beaten Kahuku by two-thirds of a point, 63 to 62 1/3, to win its fourth straight OIA title — one for each year Tucker and Hammonds have been at the central O'ahu school.

There was no such drama on the boys meet. Mililani's 77 points were more than second-place Radford and Pearl City (both 35) scored combined as the Trojans won the 22-team public-school meet for the third year in a row.

Mililani coach Shane Akamine quietly walked into retirement with six girls and four boys OIA championships, plus 16 Western Division girls titles in 17 years and three boys titles.

While the outcome was not known until many teams, including Kahuku, had gone home, the girls meet actually swung on the eighth of 16 events — the 4x100 meter relay. One of Kahuku's runners in the second/third exchange ran out of the passing zone and the Red Raiders were disqualified. That wasted an event for Kahuku's wondrous Kai sisters, who were to have run the third and fourth legs.

Mililani's team of Liane Tom, Hammonds, Tucker and freshman Mei Li Nickles won the event, giving Mililani 10 points (relay victories score 10, individual events 6).

But Kahuku regained the lead in the field events — the Kai sisters and the Fely sisters (Sassy and Ashlee) scoring 46 points among them — and led 62 1/3 to 53 when Tucker got into the blocks for the final event, the 4x400 relay.

Tucker passed the baton to Rosemary Workman in the lead, then stepped off the track and looked for Kahuku. No red uniforms. The six-girl Kahuku team had run out of events — each athlete is permitted six — and had no entry for the 4x4. They were already on the bus and headed back to the Windward side.

Akamine said better-than-expected third-place finishes in three events by freshman Deanne Soon helped put the Trojans over the top. "The disqualification opened the door, but we were still chasing them," Akamine said. Soon, the Nickles sisters (Mei Li and Chun Mei) and others stepped up to close the gap (he had "doped" Kahuku as 27-point winners).

Natasha Kai was denied an opportunity to win six gold medals by the 4x100 DQ. She won all five events she was in, scoring a meet-high 30 points, but none of the marks approached her bests.

The best mark of the meet — by either gender — was Pearl City junior Carmen Calpo's state-season best girls 800-meter run of 2 minutes, 21.2 seconds. "I've been trying hard to get my time down and prepare for states . . . but I didn't want to have the best time and have the whole state gunning for me," she said.

Highlights of the boys meet were a 6-6 high jump by William Broadus Jr. of Mililani, who also won the high hurdles, and Andrew Kamikawa's 800-1,500 double for Mililani. Brian Daniels and Kali French were also Trojan winners.

Mililani won seven of 16 boys events, including six of eight from 1,500 meters down.

EXTRA LAPS: Before the teachers' strike, the state meet was scheduled yesterday, so Cherina Tucker and Aleina Hammonds didn't plan to attend their Senior Prom. When meets were rescheduled after the strike, they scrambled to meet deadlines to buy tickets and get clearances. It was too late to get dates, but they went anyway. . . . Shane Akamine, a one-time tailback at Whittier College, has hand-picked assistant Dane Matsunaga to replace him as head coach at Mililani. Akamine succeeded the legendary Clyde Ching in 1986 and also took charge of the boys team after the legendary Derrek Higashi departed to coach for Waianae in 1999. . . . Aleina Hammonds was Mililani's leading girls scorer with 15 1/2 points. . . . Sophomore Krisha Kai may be catching up with her senior sister. Natasha beat Krisha by 3fl inches in both the long jump and triple jump. The Kais scored 46 points between them. . . . Natasha Kai had to high jump with less than two minutes rest after the 300 hurdles and missed 5-1, a height she normally would handle easily. She still won at 4-11 on fewer attempts. . . . Last event on the track calendar is the state championship meet next weekend at Maui's War Memorial Stadium. Trials Friday at 7 p.m. and finals Saturday, boys discus at 2 p.m., all other field events 3:30 p.m. and running events at 5:40 p.m.
